Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas

and

Happy New Year

It has been a while since I have posted. I hope everyone had a great Christmas, and that everyone will have a great and safe new years!

We went to Canada to visit my family for Christmas, and got back last Monday. We went down during the big snow storm about a week and a half ago. The trip is normally 16 hours and it took us 32 hours to get there. Talk about an adventure. :) It took us 2 hours to get to Abingdon, and 12 hours to get to Roanoke, normally that is 20 minutes and 2.5 hours.

When I get the chance, I will post some pictures. :)

Just a reminder, Valentines Day is not to far away, its time to start thinking of great present ideas, such as ................... a couple's portrait. : ) Schedule your couple's portrait today to guarantee that I can schedule you at a time that is best for you!

Family Portrait

Family Portrait

Here are a couple pictures from one of my latest Portrait's in and around the studio.

The deadline to have your portrait taken, and get your pictures back before Christmas is sneaking up, December 10th. After that, if you want the pictures back before Christmas, you will have to pay a special delivery fee to have the pictures delivered right to you from the lab, so you will be able to get them in time for Christmas. After that, you will have to wait until after Christmas to get the photo's. So hurry up and make an appointment. :D

Mark Schultz and Point of Grace concert - Charlotte NC

Here are 8 pictures from the Mark Schultz and Point of Grace concert that we went to last weekend.

Mark Schultz and band

and of course, Point of Grace

All the above were shot with out a flash. I didnt want to annoy them with a flash, and I like the way these look using the lights they were using at the time. :)

I believe there are 200 pictures that I kept from this concert, I just havent had the chance to process them to add to my online folder.

This was also the first time that my wife and I really heard Mark's music, and his music is really good. :) We ended up getting 6 of his 7 cd's for our youth group. :)

Child Portrait - Part 1

Last weekend I had a portrait session with this angelic girl. This is one of many pictures that was taken.

We got back from Charlotte NC this morning at 3am, talk about being tired. :) We went to see Mark Schultz and Point of Grace in concert. I figured 4gb's of memory would be more than enough. At the end I had to be careful to leave some space for pictures with the artists after the concert. :) Hopefully I can post some of those pictures in a couple of days.

And the studio is up and running. I am working on a Christmas tree set, and hopefully will get that ready to go pretty soon. :)

Studio is ready, and new promotion with Ambassador Hair works

The studio is finally put together, and two more flashes arrived in the mail, so I will have some fun playing with those later today. Right now im at the Abingdon library using the wifi trying to find some good digital backgrounds to offer as an option. This is harder than it should be. :)

I also have a promotion with Ambassador Hairworks, if you get your hair cut by them, you can receive a free mini portrait session and a free 5x7 print. Subject to availability. My goal right now is to be at the studio between 12pm and 3pm every week day, probably more.

Survey - 100 Questions

I don't normally do surveys, but I thought it might help some get to know me better. :D

1. ONE OF YOUR SCARS, HOW DID YOU GET IT?
On my knee, I was around 8 years old, playing a game during recess, slid towards the pole, problem is the pole was in the ground with cement holding it in

place and the top of the cement was sticking out a bit.

2. WHAT IS ON THE WALLS IN YOUR ROOM?
Nothing actually. got a mirror on the dresser if that counts.

3. WHAT JOBS HAVE YOU HAD?
Worked in a computer department at a Government facility as part of a high school class thing.
Worked retail at Canadain Tire for a while. I learned that sort of job was pretty boring and time seemed to drag on. But the Christmas season was fun.
Worked at the front desk of a hotel night shift. This was the most boring job I have had. The only thing to do was watch basic cable and the only thing on at night was star trek deep space nine. That got boring really really fast.
Worked at a computer programming company, at first doing data entry and program testing. The testing was pretty fun at first. Then some programming but I didnt like that most of the time. During this time I realized my interest for photography again.
I then worked for a professional photographer as his assistant doing weddings. This was my favourite job up to this point. I actually looked forward to going to work.
Then I worked at a portrait studio. This was pretty good most of the time. :) I got to meet some cool people.
And now I have my own photography business. :D

4. WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO?
All sorts, mostly what Misty is listening to.

5. DO YOU KNOW WHAT TIME YOU WERE BORN?
Umm, it was 5 minutes after the hour, not sure what hour, it was in the morning though.

6. WHAT DO YOU WANT MORE THAN ANYTHING RIGHT NOW?
World peace! Theres nothing I really want thats important. I wouldnt mind having high speed where I live, that would make life easier. Oh and there are a few things that I would like to get for my photography business, but I will get those over time.

The basket every time I shoot a basketball. :D

New Studio & Senior Special

I have rented a room in Abingdon VA, and as soon as I get things setup, I will be taking appointments. :) This has been something Ive wanted to do for a while. But because I do prefer to do pictures outside, I just haven't gotten around to it. But now that winter is around the corner, I do need an indoor location. :)

I am working on the details for a Christmas special, and as soon as I finish that, I will post more details.

I do have Three Senior Portrait specials.

Click on the above image to see the full size version.

The First Package starts at $100 and includes 20 minutes of photography time, 6 units of prints and 50 rep cards to give to friends and family. My regular price for this would be $125.

The Third Package starts at $300 and includes 60 minutes of photography, upto 3 sets of clothing, 100 rep cards, 6 units of prints and a leather bound book. My regular price for this package would be $375.

Additional prints, services and options are available if desired. :) Graduation cards are also available.

The Senior portraits will be photographed at a location of your choice, such as a local park, and school property. Assuming your school doesn't have any policies against this. If they do, there are other locations that can be used.

Sunsets - Free Wallpaper

A friend posted a picture of a sunset that reminded me of this first one. Even though the locations were about 15 driving hours apart, I was curious if it was the same day.

The sky was actually this red. I was walking through the kitchen and noticed how red the light was then I looked outside and saw this beautiful sky, so I grabbed my camera, and I drove to this location to get these shots. This was back on July 17, 2004

As you can tell, this is one of my favourite spots in Smiths Falls ON Canada to take sunset pictures. I cant remember the name of the highway, but its next to the Merricksville Highway, between the two bridges by the park. This was on June 28, 2004.

Big Falls, Between Lebanon and Cleveland VA

A friend of ours told us about some waterfalls over between Lebanon VA and Cleveland VA. It took about 20 minutes to hike to them, but they were pretty easy to get to, and there was a 2nd parking lot that would take 12 minutes off that hike time.

The GPS co-ordinates for the first parking lot is: N36°57.187' W082°03.309'. From here you get to cross a large swing bridge to get to the falls. :D

I believe the GPS co-ordinates for the waterfall is: N36°57.752' W082°03.236'. There was some tree coverage where I was when I was setting the GPS, so I don't know if the gps was reading the co-ordinates correctly. It was starting to rain, so I didn't take the time to get into a clearer area. Because of the rain I didn't get a chance to mark the 2nd parking lot either. Perhaps next time.

Thanks Barbie for telling me about the place. :D

Hayters Gap Waterfall, Revisited - updated with new link

I had to go to Bristol for a dental appointment last Thursday, so on the way home we decided to try to go to the water fall again. This time we were prepared with appropriate clothing.

The way down to the waterfall from the road side isn't exactly safe, if you loose your footing, you will be rolling for a while and right into the stream. By the time we arrived at the falls it was getting a bit to dark, so I had to hurry and get the 20 or so pictures. I am always learning things, and this time I learned that we should bring a flashlight next time! And perhaps some rope, to get down more easily and safely. I want to go back in January when there is some snow. The way up and down to the falls should be particularly interesting with the added ice, but the pictures should be worth it. :)

Hayters Gap Waterfall

My wife and I love waterfalls, especially those that make you earn the view after a hike.

This waterfall at Hayters Gap doesn't require a hike, but you do have to scale down the side of it to get this view. And we believe the path to this has poison ivy or something that causes itching. :)

We tried to find this waterfall last year when my parents came down for a visit, but we were unable to find it, mostly because the direction we came from was different than usual. We tried it again last Sunday, we thought we either missed it again, or it had dried up. On our way to Abingdon, VA, we found it!!!! Except we were wearing our Church clothes, so we couldn't hike down to the good part. But we marked the GPS so we can find it next time we are better dressed. :D

Sailing Away

I was looking through my pictures from this summer, and I thought I would create some high contrast sepia photos from some pictures I took on the St. Lawrence this past summer.

There was going to be a sail race that day, but there was not enough wind, so it was called off. There was a lot of interesting boats there.

Earlier this month, my wife and I went to a Baltimore Orioles game. My wife is a huge Boston Red Sox fan and this was her first MLB game. :)

I was not to sure how safe it would be to carry my dslr camera with me in Baltimore, so I left it at home, and brought a canon small point and shoot camera. But I wish I brought my good camera. :) Some people think you need a great camera to take great pictures, but that is not the truth. Its the person behind the camera. However a camera with manual options does make it easier. The small canon I brought with me does not allow you to choose your exposure settings, and in the shooting modes, there is nothing for sports or action. So half the time the camera chose a small aperature instead of a fast shutter speed, causing motion blur. Plus it only had 3x optical zoom. So I know next time to bring my good camera with me. :)

Here are a few pictures from this game.

Click on any image above to enlarge.

The red sox won the game, 18-10. There was a lot of hits to photograph, which was lucky. :) I was trying to get the ball as close to the batter as I could, preferably as its being hit or just after, which is not to easy considering how fast its being thrown.

One of my favorite things to photograph is action shots. The challenge of capturing something in motion, at the right moment.

Back To School Special

Well its time for the kids to go back to school, so I thought it was time for a new promotion.

And with the new school year here, that means Autumn is just around the corner. Once again, the summer sure has flown by. Autumn is one of my favorite seasons. Back in Canada, I had a 26 minute walk to the high school. I was lucky enough to live 5 walking minutes to close to the high school, to be able to take the school bus, but I didn't really mind. Had I lived closer, I would have had to get up earlier to catch the bus, and back then, I timed everything so I would arrive at the school about 1 minute within the bell would ringing, so I could sleep in as late as I could. Plus the walk wasn't that bad........most of the time. For most of the walk, it was nice back streets, full of oak and maple tree's and old architectural houses. Autumn was a nice break from the summer heat, but it was still warm enough to not need my winter clothing. Thinking back about my walk, I miss the way the crisp autumn air would smell.

This all reminds me of a scene from the movie "You've Got Mail".... Joe Fox: "Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address. On the other hand, this not knowing has its charms. "

I didn't really care for the first day of school, but I did like getting school supplies. I was a bit of a strange kid, I loved getting stationary stuff. Of course I would use it to sketch, doodle, draw, etc. I did love getting a new protractor set every year. :D

Ive been inspired to work on collages for post cards and greeting cards, and this is one I created for friends of ours, Jessica and Justin.

Christmas is not to far away, so I'm creating some greeting card templates that can be used for Christmas cards. Once I get enough, I will post them here.

Fourth of July - Fireworks

Well this took me a bit longer than I anticipated to put online.

I hope everyone had a great Canada Day and Independence Day. We kept pretty busy on the 4th. Went to the in-laws for their family get together, then over to our Church's picnic, and finally over to my wife's co-workers to see the Abingdon VA fireworks from the countryside.

Here is one of the pictures I got that night.

Sugar Hollow Park - Bristol, VA

My wife and myself went to Bristol last weekend, and for part of the day we were at Sugar Hollow Park. While we were walking around the paths, we noticed some turtles, and on the turtle we could see up close, was hair. I did not know turtles had hair. I'm guessing its some sort of fungus or moss or something growing on them, since its on the shell as well. This was just weird. :)

Humming Bird

I am back from Canada. I was away for almost 7 days exactly. :) We left at 2:45am Monday morning, and we got back the following Monday at 3:10am or so. We had a pretty good time, but I am glad the driving part is over. Is a 14 hour drive, but somehow we always manage to waste 2 or 3 more hours getting gas, rest stops, and traffic/weather. There were no detours this time, so that was pretty nice.

One day we went to Ottawa, but we didnt do any sight seeing this time.

We also went to Brockville and I got some sail boat pics that I think will look good once I play around in photoshop a bit, perhaps even corel painter.

One day we went to Merricksville, and boy that town has changed a bit, well the tourists rather. Even the art work in the stores has changed a bit. Theres a new local artist thats getting attention around Canada, not sure about the States. Its pretty good, reminds me of Tim Burtons Corps Bride and nightmare before Christmas. Its not really my style of art, but shes got a lot of tallent. There was work from an artist from China, I believe his name was Zhu Zhu, and he has a very interesting technique using corel painter, I will have to get his books sometime. :)

And we went to Picton for a day. This is my first hummingbird shot ive attempted. I switched lenses to a better one, but the hummingbird woudlnt let me get another picture, go figure. :)

Ballet Recital

Sorry for not updating for a couple of weeks. I took almost 2000 pictures at the ballet recital plus some at the rehersal, and hopefully those will be online by the end of next week. It is going to take a bit of time to process all of those images.

Because there are so many pictures to choose from, I believe I will offer proof books and press printed books. These will allow customers to get many photos for much less than what they would pay for 8x10 prints/sheets. I havent worked up the prices just yet.

Washington, DC

Well we got back from our trip to Washington DC early early this morning, around 3:30am. We had a pretty good time, and got to see some museums and memorials that we missed on our first two trips, plus we found the front of the white house this time. :) It has a much better view than the back, hehe.

It was cool to see the museum of natural history and one other. I'm bad with names so I forget the name of that one.

This was over in the Franklin Roosevelt monument area.

And here is an artistic picture that I took on our way back from the Jefferson Memorial to the Smithsonian Museums from the Franklin Roosevelt Monument, I believe. :)

Ballet Portraits

Ballet Portrait's

Last Saturday we had some Ballet Portraits at Jessica's Little Feet Dance Studio.

We had 14 sets of ballerina's come in, and they were a lot of fun to photograph. All in all I took about 560 pictures over the 11 hours that I was there. :) It will take me a while to process all of the sets, so far I finished 4 of them. Here are a couple images.

edit 2009.05.19 - fixed the broken images above.

I will be posting more as I get the images processed. Also I am hoping I can obtain a couple model releases so I can show some of those portraits as well. One of which I am planning on trying a photoshop painting technique on one of them. :D

GPS - not always trustworthy

I purchased a GPS a couple of weeks ago to assist me in finding my customers addresses for portraits. Partly because this area is rather spread out and rural, and partly because I dont know Kingsport and Johnson City TN as well as I would like. I was testing the device out to get familiar with it today in and around Kingsport TN and on the way home we hit the detour button over in Gate City. The route it gave was very scenic. After a while the road turned into a gravel road, and became more and more narrow. Then all of a sudden, the road was under water. This isnt the first time Ive seen a road underwater, I can think of two other locations that have water over the road and are fun to drive over. But this was rather wide, and looked rather deep. We decided to turn around, except there was no room to turn around, we had to back out for a while. :) Looking back I wish I took some pictures of this. It was rather funny. : ) On the way out we did notice a sign that we missed on the way in saying the road was not recommended for normal motor vehicles. :)

This reminded me of a scene from The Office. :D

And on the way to our house, we seen a goat, standing on a cow that was laying down. This was to funny not to get a picture of, so we turned around and on the way back the goat was now kneeling on the cow. I will post a picture when I get the chance. :)

Update

Lets see whats new. Its been a couple of weeks since I have posted.

We are now working on the Church Directory book. Hopefully it will be ready to be printed in a week or two.

I have been working on improving my equipment/gear lineup. I have been wanting a 2nd camera body for a backup for a while now, and I found a really good deal for one, using Microsoft Live Cashback, I saved 13%. :D Ive also bought a 2nd Vivitar 285 flash. I will use this to replace my Vivitar 283, so in theory I should be able to take pictures much faster now, because I dont have to wait for the 283 to charge up.

If anyone knows of a Church that is in need of a new Church Directory, please let me know, I would really appreciate it. :D

And here is a picture of myself and my beautiful wife, taken during the Church Directory Portraits. I did a lot of running between the camera and the seat to pose for the picture that day. :)

Well today was the last day for the Church portraits. I learned a lot from this experience, such as get some additional backup equipment, and a new laptop, so I can show the pictures right away, instead of waiting for my ancient notebook to process them. :)
